The RallySprint consisted of a rally stage, an autotest (on the pit straight) and a race on the Donington race circuit. All the cars used by the competitors were from the Austin Rover group.

The points system used was as follows: 12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4, with drivers scoring points in all three events.

1984 Austin Rover RallySprint

This was an informal event that pitched four rally drivers and four circuit racing drivers against each other. The RallySprint consisted of a rally stage, an autotest (on the pit straight and pit lane) and a race on the Donington race circuit. All the cars used by the competitors were from the Austin Rover group.

The points system used was as follows: 12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4, with drivers scoring points in all three events. Due to Keke and John Watson having the same time in the rally stage, the points for 6th and 7th were added together and split equally giving both drivers 5.5 points.

You can watch a 30 min highlights video of the event on our YouTube page. Originally produced for the BBC Grandstand programme it features commentary by the legendary Murray Walker.

1985 The Race of Stars

This was Finland’s very first rallysprint event and managed to attract a huge crowd of 25,000 spectators. The event was the idea of Ortwin Podleck, Keke’s manager, after a discussion with Nick Brittan organiser of the Donington rallysprints.

The event shared a similar concept to the Donington rallysprints with four rally drivers against four circuit racing drivers. The rallysprint consisted of three events; a rallycross stage, a slalom and a 15 lap race on the race circuit. The rallycross stage took place on Ahvenisto’s European rallycross circuit designed by Simo Lampinen. The slalom course also designed by Lampinen ran along the main bowl section of the track with the drivers dodging between cones and pirouetting around plastic trees.

The points system was as follows: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-2, with drivers scoring points in all three events.

You can watch a 47 minute highlights package from Finnish TV of the event including the full race on our YouTube page. The commentary is in Finnish but nearly all the interviews are in English.

1986 Ahvenisto Rallysprint

The second year of rallysprint at Ahvenisto only attracted 7000 spectators due to the terrible weather in nearby Helsinki.

This event stuck to the four rally drivers against four circuit racing drivers format of previous rallysprints. The rallycross again ran on the European rallycross circuit but unlike in 1985 it ran to a knockout format. Like in 1985 the slalom ran around the main bowl section of the track with the drivers again moving between cones and pirouetting around trees. The qualifying positions for the race were determined by a four lap qualifying-race in the morning (a format FISA wanted to introduce to F1), with Brundle winning and taking pole. The grid positions for the qualifying-race were decided by alphabetical order.

The points system was as follows: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-2, with drivers scoring points in all three events.

You can watch a very short video from Finnish TV of the event on our YouTube page.
